deMilo - Dana (B) (D) 12.2.2018
It is with great sadness that our Dana de Milo has passed away today 12th February 2018. Many of Dana's friends traveled from near and afar to visit her while she spent her last days in the hospital.
The rainbow community is mourning the loss of one of their most beloved kuia. Dana de Milo moved from Auckland to Wellington in the early 1960s, when still in her teens. She became part of Wellington's community of 'queens', most of whom were unable to find employment and turned to sex work to survive.
Later in life de Milo became involved in HIV/AIDS prevention work, the Māori Women's Welfare League and support of the transgender community (Te Ara - The Encyclopedia of New Zealand).
Last year an op shop was named in her honour. It raises funds for Gender Minorities Aotearoa who hope to open a Gender Centre later this year. 128 Abel Smith St by the Terrace Tunnel, open Wed-Sun 10am-6pmhttp://www.auntydanas.com
